Metal Roofing FAQ

Will a metal roof be loud in the rain?

Surprisingly, metal roofs are no more noisy than asphalt roofs during rain storms.

Does a metal roof attract lightning?

Metal roofing won't attract anymore lightning than asphalt and it is non-combustible.

Will hail damage a metal roof?

Metal roofs are actually stronger against hail damage than traditional shingles. While asphalt shingles can be dented and punctured causing a roof leak, metal roofing will absorb the impact and continue protecting your home.

Will a metal roof absorb heat and make my home hotter?

Metal roofing will reflect sunlight rather than absorb it. Because of this reflection, metal roofing can actually save homeowners on their energy costs.

Are metal roofs heavy?

Another surprising fact is that metal roofing is one of the lightest roofing materials available.

What type of venting does a metal roof need?

Metal roofing will require similar venting to an asphalt roof. Where it is possible, ridgevent is the best option because it allows for the least amount of cuts in the roof.

What type of maintenance do metal roofs require?

Metal roofing is basically maintenance free. As with any roofing product, you will want to inspect your roof occasionally to look for any potential issues.

Will I need different gutters with a metal roof?

Bulldog Home Improvements recommends 6" gutters on most homes in Middle Tennessee to handle our frequent heavy rain. Metal roofs will especially require the larger gutter size because water will run off the metal roof at a much higher rate than asphalt shingles.

What type of metal is used for roofing?

A special type of coated steel is used for most metal roofing applications. This coated steel is incredibly corrosive resistant giving it a long usable life. We install metal roofing in 24, 26, and 29 gauge sheets. The lower the gauge, the thicker and more durable the metal.

Why is metal roofing considered environmentally friendly?

Metal roofing is completely recyclable at the end of it's useful life, meaning it won't end up in the local landfill.

What metal roofing colors are available?
